What happened to the refuse we logged? All food scrapes except for meats – composted or fed to the chickens. All plastics, glass, cans, cardboard, and paper – recycled or reused, yard waste – composted or used as mulch for our garden beds in the back yard.

We try to save and use/repurpose building material.Recently built a chicken coop, run, 3 additional planting beds, and a outdoor cat house from left

over or repurposed materials out of our own yard.

Save leftovers and repurpose the good old stuff.

Compost

We compost leaves, grass clippings, dead plants unless diseased, bush/plant

trimmings, and all kitchen scraps except meats. Meats will draw rodents to your

compost pile.

Rain Barrel

We have built several barrels like this to collect rain water for our garden and flowers. This has greatly lowered our

water bills in the spring, summer, and fall months. The barrels have also helped to eliminate areas of pooling water in our

yard during rain stormsOur city has a rain water collection

program with classes on how to build, set up, and benefit from rain water collection.

Sustainable living is cumulative; it is accomplished a little each day until

balance is found.
