INTRODUCTION

in Quran, the Islamic Book of Religion had stated 1400 years before science and technology had developed significantly. It had defined briefly the benefits of lentils عدس)) as in verse (2:61) of chapter (2) Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow)

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) or known as Kacang Kuda in MalayLentil (Lens culinaris) or known as kacang Merah or kacang

Dhal in Malay. Important and cheap source of vegetable protein which can be

used as a substitute for animal protein and substantially contribute to the human.

Chickpea and lentil had become a staple food in other, even come from the same family Fabaceae of legume, but both are different things.

There are various way to consuming this type of legumes depending on the countries and cultures.

ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE Quranic verses and Hadis related to

ChickpeaThere is no Quranic verses or a words from our Prophet that mentioning about Chickpea, but despite of lack of evidence to prove this, the Hummus itself has a rich tradition-some even refer to it as an “ancient” food that has a history of being consumed by important historical figures in the middle east.

Quranic verses related to Lentil

“And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked" (Al-Baqarah, verse 2)

Hadis related to Lentil

انه الله رسول عن البيهقي االمام روىالعدس في : قال

" ، العين ويدمع ، القلب يرفق اكلهالكبير " ويذهب

Imam al -Bayhaqi narrated from the Prophet (PBUH) said: ”Eating lentil soften the heart, brings tears to the eye and clears arrogance (from one’s heart)”

The Prophet (PBUH) recommended lentil for its high medical values, even though lentil was not one of the familiar dishes in the Arabian Peninsula once, but somehow it has been considered as one of the miracles of the seal of the Messengers and Prophets.

THE APPLICATION OF THIS LEGUMESMany attempts have been made to use chickpeas in non-dairy infant formulas and in weaning food blends. The protein efficiency ratio (PER), net protein retention (NPR) and net protein utilization (NPU) of chickpea based infant formula were not different to soy or milk based formula. Similarly, when fed to malnourished children, there was no significant difference between chickpea based formula and commercial soy formula in the samples tested.

Lentil seeds are used for various cuisines worldwide and most commonly used as main dishes, side dishes, as sprouted grain in salads with bread and rice. Its Seed can be fried and seasoned for other uses. It is used as a staple of the diet in many Middle Eastern countries and India. Lentil flour can be used to prepare dishes such as soups, stews an pureness. The flour can be mixed with cereals to make breads and cakes and as a food for infant.Plant residues like dried leaves, stalks, husk, podwall etc. left after threshing are a good source of cattle feed. These residues contain about 10.2% moisture, 1.8% fat, 4.4% protein, 50% carbohydrate, 21.4% fibre and 12.2% ash. Lentil seeds are also used by industry as a source of commercial starch for textiles and printing.

Protein

Chickpea proteins have been considered a suitable source of dietary protein due to their good balance in essential amino acids composition, high bioavailability, and low level of antinutritional factors.

Fiber

Within the studied legumes, chickpea stood out in relation to the others with lipid values two and a half times higher .

Manganese and folate.

Garbanzo beans also contain vitamins and minerals and significantly boost your intake of manganese and folate. The mineral manganese helps support bone development and wound healing and also helps carry out chemical reactions important to your metabolism.

LENTIL

Dietary Fiber

Lentils contain some soluble fiber, but are an outstanding source of insoluble fiber. Fiber-rich foods like lentils may also help prevent stroke, heart disease, diabetes, high blood cholesterol and hypertension.

Lean Protein

Cooked lentils provide 18 grams of protein per cup, with less than 1 gram of fat, negligible saturated fat and no cholesterol. When compared to beef, poultry and fish, all of which are good sources of protein but contain much higher amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol, the Harvard School of Public Health names legumes such as lentils a better protein choice.

FolateEach cup of

cooked lentils has 358 micrograms of folate which is necessary to supports nervous system health, aids in energy metabolism and is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA and red blood cells.

IronA cup of lentils

provides 87 percent of the iron. A man need daily and 38 percent of the amount a woman needs. The body uses iron to produce red blood cells and adenosine triphosphate, or ATP.

CONCLUSION

chickpeas and lentils contain very significant aspect in order to increase the nutritional value in daily diet. Not only that, these two components (chickpeas and lentils) also play a very important role to increase the sensory quality in dishes.

For the health scope, consuming chickpeas & lentils could help in preventing the increasing of blood pressure, high in protein and fiber content, contain several key vitamins and minerals that known to benefit human health.

from the Islamic perspective, we can see that are very clear explanation about how our religion is very concern about healthy lifestyle and it shows the strong relation with consumption of chickpeas and lentils as they give a lot of benefit to human health.
