In the UK containers of oil or fuel cannot be stored outside unless they are correctly bunded in a secondary containment item (Oil Storage Regulations 2001). This means that if the container of oil leaks it will be contained within the bund. The secondary containment item must be able to hold a minimum of 25% of the total volume or 110% of the largest container whichever is the greater. If a company was to store 4 x 205 litres drums the pallet sump must be able to hold 225.5 litres of liquid.

Spill trays - suitable for containing minor spills within the work place and for the safe storage of small containers of liquids.

Work floors - modular internal system designed for use as a liquid dispensing or decanting station within the working environment to contain any incidental spills.

Drum spill pallets - secondary containment systems designed to collect drips, spills or leaks from oil and chemical drums. These prevent the spread of any spilt liquids across the workplace floor and ensure safe working. Fully compliant with current UK Storage Regulations.

Overpacks - designed for the safe storage, containment and transportation of damaged and leaking chemical and fuel drums. Manufactured in accordance with UN packing regulations.

IBC spill pallets - secondary containment system designed to collect liquid drips, spills and leaks from Intermediate Bulk Containers. Fully compliant with current UK Storage Regulations.

Flexible bunds - provides a flexible and mobile means for fuel, chemical and water spill containment. They are widely used as temporary bunds for mobile plant and machinery.

Drum handling - drum handling and dispensing products designed to make the action and dispensation of liquids from drums around site as efficient and as safe as possible.

Cabinets - provide safe storage and segregation of chemicals, paints, flammable and hazardous substances as defined by COSHH guidelines.

Bunded stores - provide safe storage for 205 litre drums, 1000 litre IBCs and other smaller containers. A bunded store can help avoid potential spill hazards and environmental pollution by containing the total volume of liquid stored should a spill occur. Fully compliant with current UK Storage Regulations.

Tanks - manufactured in both polyethylene and steel, provide for the safe storage/dispensing of waste oil, heating oil, diesel, lubricants and coolants.

Vehicle wash - wash systems for cleaning the tyres of vehicles when they are exiting a construction site or restricted area to control and eliminate the pollution of public roads.

Pollution Control Centre - Fully galvanised steel unit designed for storing and dispensing all types of pollution control equipment including liquids. These stores can be customised to suit your requirements and allow 24 hour access for products when required by employees in the event of a spill.

Absorbents

Maintenance - Grey in colour, suitable for absorbing most types of industrial spills including both oil and water based liquids including solvents, coolants and mild chemicals. Recommended for internal use.

Oil & Fuel - White in colour, ideal for where the absorption of oil based liquids such as fuels, lubricants and other hydrocarbon based products is required and for the selective recovery of oil from water. Recommended for external use.

Chemical - Yellow in colour, designed to absorb aggressive fluids including acids and alkalis. Recommended for internal use.

Industrial spill kits - Designed to contain and clean up spillages and limit environmental damage. Allows you to effectively respond to any oil, chemical or general liquid spills. Range of carry bags, wheelie bins and lockers with different capacities capable of dealing with a spill under a worst case scenario.

Hazardous materials spill kits - Required when you are working with hazardous materials and chemicals. Kits contain a variety of absorbent materials used to contain and clean up an acid, chemical or body fluid spill.

Spill Risk Site Assesment Report

The purpose of the Spill Risk AssessmentReport is to establish a benchmark among companies for correct procedures when dealing with dangerous liquids. This benchmark will ensure you company is provided with a mechanism to improve and help your organisations in mitigating the risks to pollution of controlled waters with dangerous liquids as oil and chemical spills into controlled waters are illegal and very

expensive in fines, clean up costs, insurance and reputation. The adequacy of the spill prevention and control measures on your site is rated against what measures should be in place bearing in mind the type, storage, handling and use of the liquids on site.

Observations

Informed that this location is used to store a single IBC, small number of drums, small containers of oils, AdBlue and some hazardous liquids. Inspection revealed most are free standing without any secondary containment or spill protection. Our recommendation would be to introduce a 2 x SpillMate dispensers to this area stocked with a range of maintenance and chemical absorbent materials allowing for the quick and effective recovery in the event of a spill. 1 x IBC spill pallet and 2 x 4 drum spill pallets.

At the time paint is stored within a shipping container. The tins are placed on wooden pallets and there was clear evidence of previous spills. This metal container does not provide any form of bund containment and in the event of a major spillage it is highly likely that liquid would escape and contaminate the yard and drain system. We would recomended our economy bunded safety store which would provide containment in the event of a spill.

Observations

Internal storage area clearly shows signs of previous spillages. Areas is currently serviced by a spill dispenser containing maintenance pads which would not offer adequate protection in the event of a spill. We would therefore recommend the introduction of a 1200Litre drop front spill kit. 205 litre drums and smaller containers are contained on secondary bunding. Currently there is no containment for all the IBC, we would propose that all IBC'S are stored on a spill pallets.

At the time of inspection this area did not have any spill kits. As this is potentially a high risks from an oil spill we would recommend the introduction of oil & fuel emergency spill kits. All kits should be clearly labelled and numbered for identification and shown on the emergency response company site plan together with first responders contact.

BSIF Training

Operator Spill Risk Awareness and TrainingWhilst it is essential to have the right equipment for spill control available, the key to minimising spill risk is to ensure that the workforce are aware of the spill risks and are familiar with correct spill response procedures.

As per our discussion at the day of visit on site about the necessity of training for the workforce with accredited First Responder Spill Control training from a BSIF accredited Spill Training Course. The content course structure is as follow: environmental awareness, legislation and compliance, environmental threats and spillage impact, health and safety implications, spill prevention practices – storage, handling and transportation of liquids, spill response, simulated spill exercise and after spill analysis.

We also offer a Train the Trainer course which gives delegates in large organizations the tools to effectively communicate and deliver the First Responders Spill Training Course to their own teams and colleagues. As well as giving them skills in developing their own teaching methods, we offer a Hotline service to ensure the trainer is never left with unanswered questions.
