Welcome to Savannah and the 2022 IIAR Industrial Refrigeration Conference & Expo!

Welcome to the 2022 IIAR Natural Refrigeration

Conference & Expo! It’s the beginning of a new

membership year for all of us at IIAR, and most

importantly, it’s our first year “back” to normal in-person meetings.

That means it’s time to meet new colleagues, network, and catch

up with friends and business partners at our industry’s largest

conference and expo event.

I would like to take this opportunity to talk about how this event,

and especially your membership in this organization is making an

important contribution to our everyday lives and the lives of others.

Making the world a safer place is IIAR’s first mission. We do that by addressing climate change

through the promotion of natural refrigerants, looking for better ways to improve energy efficiency,

and by developing safety standards and training programs that ensure the wider adoption and safe

application of natural refrigerants.

Embracing the many applications of natural refrigerants means we’re making the environment safer

for ourselves and our future generations.

Another part of our mission is to extend the reach of natural refrigerants to all sorts of refrigeration

applications. That’s a goal that our membership and our board are embracing, as evidenced by our

focus on producing and maintaining safety standards for not only ammonia but now carbon dioxide

and soon, hydrocarbons.

Our industry has a long record of safety to be proud of, and our standards activity is at the core of

that. We’re making refrigeration facilities safer through the development of PSM, RMP programs,

and the education and training that happens right here at our annual conference.

The work of our committees is the cornerstone of our organization and activities. I’d like to use this

message to not only welcome you to this year’s conference but also to encourage you to find a

committee whose work you can participate in and become passionate about.

That sense of volunteer leadership just keeps growing every year. If you’re a longtime IIAR member,

welcome back And if you’re new here, I hope you enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of your

colleagues. Welcome to Savannah and enjoy the conference!

IIAR is the world’s leading advocate for the safe, reliable and efficient

use of ammonia and other natural refrigerants as well as an ANSI-accredited

standards developer. IIAR is currently the only organization writing design and operation standards

specifically for ammonia refrigeration systems. All IIAR Standards are developed to meet criteria set by

ANSI. All IIAR Standards must be re-affirmed every 5 years.

IIAR 1 – American National Standard for Definitions and Terminology Used in IIAR Standards. Provides a unified set of definitions for use in the IIAR Standards. Originally published in 2012, IIAR 1 was most recently re-affirmed in 2017 and is due for re-affirmation in 2022.

IIAR 2 – American National Standard for Safe Design of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems. IIAR 2 is the definitive design safety standards for the ammonia refrigeration industry. Originally developed in 1974. IIAR 2 has seen many updates, addendums and changes throughout the years. The update in 2014 saw changes which included code language to make IIAR 2 a single comprehensive standard covering the safe design of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration system. IIAR 2-2014 Addendum A is the latest edition published in 2019, addressing ammonia absorption systems. IIAR 2-2021 is the latest edition.

IIAR 3 – American National Standard for Ammonia Refrigeration Valves. IIAR 3 specifies performance criteria for materials, design parameters, marking and testing of valves and strainers used in closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. IIAR 3 was first published in 2012 and was re-affirmed in 2017. It is due for re-affirmation in 2022 and will include required documentation to be provided by the Valve Manufacturer.

IIAR 4 – American National Standard for Installation of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems. First published in 2015, IIAR 4 was written to serve as a standard for the installation of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems and overpressure protection relief piping systems. IIAR 4-2020 is the latest edition.

IIAR 5 – American National Standard for Startup of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems. This standard provides basic minimum requirements for the safe startup of closed-circuit refrigeration systems and additions and modifications made to such systems. First published in 2013, IIAR 5-2019 is the latest edition.

IIAR 6 – Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems. This proposed standard is intended to provide the minimum requirements for inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) tasks and record keeping applicable to closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. IIAR 6-2019 is the latest edition.

TITLE

IIAR CERTIFICATE

IIAR understands the need within the refrigeration industry for a rigorous training program that provides verifiable knowledge and understanding of IIAR Standards, which are the underpinning of industrial ammonia refrigeration design, operation, and maintenance.

That’s why IIAR established its Academy of Natural Refrigerants and why we continue to develop Certificate Courses that serve the continuing education needs of refrigeration professionals. The first program to be launched focused on the ANSI/IIAR 2 standard, Safe Design of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems. This was followed-up with the introduction of two more courses: Installation, Start-up and Commissioning, and Decommissioning of Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems, and An Introduction to PSM/RMP. It now includes Process Hazard Analysis and IIAR 6.

Since the introduction of the ANR Certificate Program, over 500 natural refrigeration professionals have participated in a certificate course, and 95 individuals have successfully completed the IIAR 2 and/or IIAR 4/5/8 courses and been awarded a Certificate of Completion. Check out our certificate holders online: www.iiar.org/education/certificateholders.

Mission and Future PlansAs the ANSI/IIAR suite of standards continues to expand and evolve, several of these guidelines are now being integrated into national and international codes. And with the increasing significance of ANSI/IIAR standards in the regulatory landscape, a thorough knowledge of these documents is more important than ever for the natural refrigeration professionals. With this in mind, IIAR will continue to expand its certificate course offerings in the coming year in order to provide subject matter education for the natural refrigerant community regarding ANSI/IIAR standards, process safety, safety management, system operation, and engineering system design. Upcoming courses include: Basic Design of an Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration System; and CO2 Systems.

Dave Rule, IIAR President, notes that the mission of IIAR’s Certificate Program is to offer a mechanism whereby industrial refrigeration professionals can, through participation in a defined curriculum, exhibit an advanced understanding of refrigeration design, safe operation of refrigeration systems, and the industry standards that outline best practices in large-scale refrigeration. “We want to identify individuals who are proficient in the design, operation, and maintenance of industrial/commercial natural refrigeration systems, and we want employers, regulators, and customers to know that there is a group of refrigeration professionals who are ahead of the pack when it comes to knowledge of current standards.”
