Fratelli Tutti #4 – Chapter 2: A Stranger on the Road
After taking a break from our discussion of Pope Francis’ latest Encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, for Holy Week and Easter, it is time for us to return. It is rather apropos that we should come back to this Encyclical while still celebrating the Easter Season, as, during this season, we read from the Acts of the Apostles about the beginnings of the Church and the fraternity that existed at that time. (You may remember that Fratelli Tutti translates to “brothers and sisters, all.”)
“They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. […] All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.” [Acts 2:42, 44-45]
As we return to our reading of Fratelli Tutti, we have come to Chapter 2, where Pope Francis grounds his observations and teachings in Sacred Scripture, as we may remember he did in Laudato Si’. This time he uses Jesus’ telling of the Parable of the Good Samaritan as an illustration of fraternity. [cf. LK 10:25-37]
As you may remember, the premise of this Parable is the question that was posed to Jesus by the scribe, “Who is my neighbor?” [LK 10:25] After telling the Parable, Jesus concludes by asking the scribe a variation on that question and giving the lesson of the Parable, “‘Which of these three [the priest, the Levite or the Samaritan], in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?’ He answered, ‘The one who treated him with mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” [LK10:36-37]
Therefore, “the significance of the parable of the Good Samaritan [is that] love does not care if a brother or sister in need comes from one place or another. For ‘love shatters the chains that keep us isolated and separate; in their place, it builds bridges. Love enables us to create one great family, where all of us can feel at home… Love exudes compassion and dignity.’” [FT, 62]
“The parable shows us how a community can be rebuilt by men and women who identify with the vulnerability of others, who reject the creation of a society of exclusion, and act instead as neighbors, lifting up and rehabilitating the fallen for the sake of the common good. At the same time, it warns us about the attitude of those who think only of themselves and fail to shoulder the inevitable responsibilities of life as it is.” [FT, 67] “Each day we have to decide whether to be Good Samaritans or indifferent bystanders.” [FT, 69]
As we mentioned above, the twist that Jesus makes on the scribe’s question gives us the crux of the Parable. “He asks us not to decide who is close enough to be our neighbor, but rather that we ourselves become neighbors to all.” [FT, 80]
Jesus gives us, as Christians, another reason to “become neighbors to all,” when He says, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” [MT 25:35] These words “compel us to recognize Christ himself in each of our abandoned or excluded brothers and sisters.” [FT, 85]
In Chapter 3 of Fratelli Tutti, “Envisaging and Engendering an Open World,” Pope Francis will continue his exploration of true fraternity through the wisdom of our human nature and relations.

A message from our Bishop As a Diocese, we continue to join in fervent prayer for peace throughout the world and for an abrupt end to the unjustified attack upon Ukraine. We echo
the plea expressed by Pope Francis, In the name of God, listen to the cry of those who suffer, and put an end to the bombings and attacks! Let there be real and decisive focus on negotiations and let the humanitarian corridors be effective and safe. In the name of God, I ask you: stop this massacre! May Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us!
In addi on to our prayers, it is encouraged that financial assistance be offered to the suffering in

SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY
DIFFICULTY, SURVIVAL, AND GLORY In Revela on, John the Evangelist tells us what we can expect as followers of the risen Jesus: distress, endurance, and a kingdom. Although we are only eight days into our fi y‐day Easter feas ng, we cannot ignore the distress weighing down our daily lives. Jesus’ resurrec on does not erase individual suffering, but his glorious triumph over death cul vates endurance in our hearts. We remember that Jesus did not spare himself, and we ask for the strength to endure as he did. Imita ng Christ helps us grow as members of God’s royal family. As beloved ci zens of the Kingdom of God, we recognize our kinship with all people. Peter demonstrates his care for others as he heals mul tudes of broken, suffering people. In the Gospel, Thomas accepts his own spiritual healing when Jesus helps him to believe. In mes of
difficulty, survival, and glory, we borrow Thomas’ declara on of faith: “My Lord and my God!” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
